CHAPTER EIGHT:
SPRING 2007 -
WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT

What high hopes I had coming into this season.  After losing my nerve at the end of last season I was prepared to regain my confidence and paddle some harder stuff in my Kaituna (no more Tomcat.)  I was going to hard boat the Elk during the Webster Springs Wildwater Weekend, get to paddle with some of the original founders of WVWA at Seneca Rocks, hit a North Branch release and then let myself be talked into running the canyon during the Stonycreek Rendezvous.  Instead I suffered with debilitating back pain at Webster Springs and then didn't make it to Seneca due to cold weather and low water.  It turned out to be a good thing that we didn't travel to Seneca Rocks because I ended up in the hospital with a sever bacterial infection and Gall Bladder problems on Easter Sunday.  After spending three days in the hospital I tried to talk my Doctor into giving me the OK to paddle the North Branch for my Birthday.  She thought I was nuts.  As it turned out, not only was I not going to be allowed to paddle the North Branch that weekend, I was going to have to sit out Stonycreek too.  So here it is approaching the end of April and all I have is one disappointing run to show for it and the future doesn't look too bright.  If I regain enough strength by this weekend, I will get to paddle the North Branch but after that it is a little murky.  I will be seeing the Doctor again May 4th and will be scheduling my Gall Bladder surgery at that time.  I tried to talk her into postponing until late fall but she won't hear of it.  The best I can hope for is that the procedure can be done laparoscopic which would have a short recovery period.  This would get me back on the water early summer.  If they have to go with the more extensive surgery then I don't know when I'll be back.  Either way, this is a terrible set back to my paddling development.  Spring 2007 - What a disappointment!
