This trip was
supposed to start in Rockwood and end in Fort Hill but when the trip leader got
a little confused on the directions, they ended up running from Markleton to
Harnedsville instead. Either way, it was a fun & beautiful way to
start off 4 days of paddling with with old friends and new acquaintances from
the Monocacy Canoe Club over Memorial Day weekend.

This level may
provide the best features this river has to offer. Many interesting lines can be
explored other than the main channels. Some offering a creeky feel and ledge
drops. Rapids worth mentioning follow in correct sequence: Not far below the
put-in, the river heads right and bends hard left. A sneak exists by staying far
left. A more interesting line would be to stay right. The next significant
rapid is Lunch Rock. This occurs before the 1st railroad bridge. Note: A
strainer still remains on the left bank. The river left line can
still be ran with caution. A line also exists down the middle. Another good one
is a blind boulder garden that can be ran several ways. The most straightforward
would be to start left and make a sharp right. There is at least one more good
rapid that requires maneuvering before the second railroad bridge. Just before
this bridge some steep waves are found on the left. Watch for big a hole just
left of the wavetrain. A couple more good rapids follow. One is long and
technical and requires at least a couple of moves to be in the right place. The
other is a river-wide ledge that has a good route right of center. Near the end
of the run, some good chutes can be found on the right side of the river.

What a great river to run!
Ran 3 sections of this river in 2002
Starting with
Rockwood to Markleton
Class 2-3
This is considered to be the easiest of the 3 sections
See: Canoeing Guide to Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia
This can be purchased at a reputable paddling store
This section of river requires intermediate whitewater skills
Nick and I ran this late spring 2002
The gauge was near the middle of the runnable limits
The guide calls the river runnable from 2.1' - 3.5' @ Markleton
At the level we ran it, the river was challenging with long rapids able to cause open boats to bail
A couple of class 3 rapids may be found on this stretch
Me
somewhere about halfway between
Rockwood and Markleton
Weeks later (6/9/02)
We ran the next 2 sections combined
Markleton to Fort Hill and Fort Hill to Harnedsville
We found out why these sections were separated leaving the first to be only 6 miles
This is due to several boulder congested rapids that require extreme maneuvering
This is a run requiring class 3 skills
We ran it at the bottom of the runnable limits
2' - 3.5' @ Markleton
Above the famous
"Lunch Rock"
Nick at
"Lunch Rock"
The section from
Fort Hill to Harnedsville
tamed down a little but was still a challenging run
Class 2-3
Possibly one of the most difficult rapids on all 3 sections was found here
It was marked by a large waterfall on river left
Runnable from 2' - 4' @ Markleton
